Dental Assistant Education

What do Dental Assistants Do?

Dental assistant training is essential for performing quality patient care plus a wide variety of office and dental laboratory duties. As the dental assistant, your most important role is to help patients feel comfortable as you strive to reduce their anxiety through all stages of dental procedures. Dental assistant education will prepare you for these tasks and a successful career.

Study and Learning

A national dental assistant board is responsible for issuing the necessary credentials you need to work in most dental offices. Your chosen dental assistant education program should meet any nationally prescribed criteria. Graduation from an accredited school will make your eligibility for national certification and membership in the appropriate associations possible. Personal cleanliness and accomplished communication skills are necessary for you to be a successful dental assistant. Your dental assistant education will teach you the essential characteristics of a great dental assistant. Dental assistant training will include areas of study such as administrative tasks, patient care and lab skills necessary for your certification and to ensure your value to an employer. Most dental assistant education programs will include practical instruction or will provide supervised training in a dental office.

Employment Potential

If you are going to look for advancement opportunities then you will also need to develop a plan for continuing dental assistant education. As a dental assistant you may find advanced employment as an office manager, an instructor in a dental assisting school, or selling dental products. Many dental assistants consider their training and experience as the foundation for advancement to more highly skilled employment with higher pay. For instance, you might consider adding more studies to your dental assistant training towards qualification as a dental hygienist. If working in a dental office as part of a professional health team appeals to you, then you should plan on dental assistant training at a certified institution.
