Many people recognize New Jersey from movies, TV shows and songs before they've even visited the "Garden State." But this state, which has "liberty and prosperity" as its motto, has a lot more to it than what's depicted on the movie and TV screens.
New Jersey is a diverse and interesting place, with cities, seashores, state parks, farms, and an abundance of natural beauty. New Jersey also has a lot of history, as it was the 3rd state to join the union, in 1787. The capital city is Trenton, and the state was named for the Channel island of Jersey, in honor of Sir George Carteret, one of the two men to whom the land was originally given.
It claims the eastern goldfinch as its state bird, and the violet is its official flower. The state has no official song as its anthem - perhaps because so many other musicians have already crooned about New Jersey, it's just not necessary.
