If you have ever had surgery performed on you, chances are, you were probably sedated for a least a small portion of your operation, usually with the help of an anesthesiologist technician.
Sometimes, you have to breathe pleasant gas. Other times, you receive an injection. In either case, you slip away and lose all sense of time and space. It sounds simple and pleasant enough, but it takes a lot of skill to provide the right dosage for each patient.
Anesthesiologist Assistants Give the Right Dose
If you are an anesthesiologist technician or assistant, you certainly have your work cut out for you. You basically provide support for the head anesthesiologist. If you give a person too much anesthesia, they could become very sick. If you give them too little, they might not be sedated enough during their operation.
Anesthesiologist Assistant Job Duties
Before you can become an anesthesiologist technician, you must master many essential skills such as drawing blood, monitoring vital signs, and analyzing specimens.
In essence, you'll need to learn how to determine the proper dosage of medicine for each individual patient using indicators such as their weight, blood pressure, medical condition, and age. There is not a lot of room for error which is why you'll need proper training.
Getting the training you'll need
You'll need to attend an anesthesiologist assistant program at an accredited university in order to secure a foundation knowledge. Thereafter, you'll have to pass the certification administered by the National Commission on Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants. Many hospitals will then give you in-house training during a probationary period.
Job prospects are good once you complete these steps. They will be even better in the years to come as baby boomers transition into retirement age. The entire health care system promises to grow rapidly over the next 20 years or so.
