What does a Medical Technician Education involve?

While there are some situations in which it is possible to qualify for a medical lab tech position with experience, some courses, and on-the-job training, it is not the norm. Most often in order successfully to pursue a career as a medical lab tech you will have to have a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or one of the life sciences.

Another possible route to completing your medical technician training is to pursue both an associate’s degree and certification with one of the health care boards.

Chemistry, biological sciences, microbiology, mathematics, and statistics study are all courses you should expect as part of your medical technician education. Specialized training for sample gathering and machine operation is also standard. Approximately one third of your 2 years of full time study will be accomplished out of the classroom in practical application of your studies.

What will my Medical Technician Training prepare me to do?

Being a medical tech is a very fulfilling job, since you are working to help improve the health of individuals and society at large. As part of the job you will collect, process, and evaluate samples of bodily fluids and tissue.

After completing your medical technician training, you can work in a hospital, medical clinic, vet clinic, sports association, relief organization, or with the armed forces.
