New York, or the "Empire State," is a wonderful place to attend college. For one thing, there are a lot of universities to choose from! But most students find that the state itself is rich in cultural, professional, and educational opportunities - and the beautiful landscapes throughout the state don't hurt, either.
Many people might be surprised to learn that New York's capital city is Albany, not New York City, which attracts the largest number of tourists. The focus might be on Manhattan, but the rest of the state's university towns have a great deal to offer, as well.
The state was originally named after England's Duke of York, and New York joined the union in 1788 as the 11th state to do so. The bluebird is the state's official bird mascot, the flower is the rose, and the state song is the cheerful "I Love New York."
