When you drive through Massachusetts, you're likely to notice that the turnpike signs are decorated with drawings of pilgrim hats. Massachusetts is proud of its pilgrim past; it was the first state that English settlers entered, first setting foot on Plymouth Rock off the rocky New England shores.
Named after a local Native American tribe whose name means "a large hill place," Massachusetts now has a wealth of private and public colleges and universities. With a rich history, beautiful landscapes, and an abundance of things to do, Massachusetts is an ideal place to pursue your university degree.
Its capital is the thriving, beautiful city of Boston, but there are many other exciting cities and small towns worth exploring, and many students like to head to Cape Cod for the summer. Massachusetts' state flower is, appropriately, the Mayflower, after the first ship to dock off of Massachusetts. Its state song is "Hail Massachusetts."
