How to become a Computer Systems AdministratorIf your computer has ever had a problem, chances are, you’ve used a computer systems administrator to help you get back on track. They’re the ones who calmly guide you through the step-by-step troubleshooting process over the phone.

With a seemingly endless supply of technical knowledge and diplomacy, they manage to rescue even the most crazed users and computers. It truly is a sight to behold.

Becoming a Computer Systems Administrator

As amazing as they are, computer system administrators are just like everyone else. The only difference is, they really really know their stuff when it comes to computers. A good many of them have a computer science bachelors degree or a related associate degree of some kind.

This foundation knowledge in computers is not 100 percent necessary, but most would agree that it is an asset when interviewing for the position. Thereafter, your employer will train you on specific aspects of the job. You’ll need to understand many applicable computer systems, software, and hardware if you plan to offer assistance.

Job outlook and salary for a Computer Systems Administrator

According to a 2002 report by the U.S. Department of Labor, computer systems administrators will be one of the fastest growing jobs through the next several years. The world’s growing dependence on computers means that there will be plenty of malfunctions, crashes, and system failures in the near future. Invariably, users will need help.

Depending on your exact employer, you can expect to live in just about any locale. Some call centers are even in tropical locations. The median salary for this industry is about $40,000 a year. This, of course, will change by location, experience, and company.
